Wrinkle aging

Wrinkle aging is one of the things that we dread most as we age, and some people will try anything in order to reduce the effect. But if we want to fight off wrinkles, first we have to understand why they appear.

Wrinkles and aging are closely connected, but why do we get wrinkles in the first place?

Loss of Collagen
Collagen is a protein in the skin that gives it elasticity. As long as we have enough collagen, our skin will move back into place after it is stretched or pulled, such as when making an expression. Unfortunately, we produce less collagen as we age, and so creases that form on our face as we smile or frown become permanent.

Unfortunately, this doesn’t mean that we can just apply more collagen to our skin to fight off wrinkles. Creams that contain collagen will not have a lasting effect on wrinkle aging, but creams that encourage the production of collagen can make a big difference.

Skin cells divide more slowly
Our skin repairs itself by replacing damaged cells with replicas of healthy cells. However, as we age, the healthy cells divide more slowly, meaning that it takes longer for the skin to repair and renew itself.

Fat cells get smaller
Our skin is so supple because of a layer of fat cells just under the surface. As we age, these fat cells get smaller and the skin gets thinner and more papery, allowing wrinkles to form.

Sun Damage
UV radiation is responsible for most of the damage on our skin. It thins the epidermis (the outer layer of our skin) and encourages the overproduction of melanin. When we’re young, we consider melanin to be a good thing – it’s what gives you a tan after sunbathing – but too much of it leads to permanent dark spots and potential skin cancer. Too much melanin also makes collagen break down more rapidly, even faster than is associated with natural aging, making wrinkles appear even faster.

Free Radicals
Free radicals are unstable oxygen molecules in your skin that cause collagen to break down. These oxygen molecules lack an electron, and so they steal electrons from collagen in your skin in order to stabilize, leading to the fast formation of wrinkles. Free radicals are found in the skin because of exposure to toxins such as air pollution and cigarette smoking, as well as to UV rays.

Skin dehydration
As we age, our skin loses its ability to retain moisture, making it dry and leading to wrinkle aging. This is why it is important to moisturize the skin every day.

A simple and obvious cause, but it is true. Gravity pulls downwards at your skin, causing it to sag over time as it loses its elasticity.
